The city can trace its history back a thousand years, to the arrival of a religious community seeking a permanent resting place for the body of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. As a shrine for their saint, they built first a wooden, then a stone church, on top of a rocky hill, protected on three sides by the River Wear. Durham is a compact city yet offers a wide range of facilities. A wide choice of shops and restaurants co-exist happily with the Victorian Market. Much of Durham's shopping area is closed to traffic, making for a more relaxed atmosphere. Take time to sit in the cobbled Market Place and enjoy some of the street entertainment, particularly during July and August. Part of the World Heritage Site along with the city's castle, the cathedral is widely regarded to be among the finest Norman architecture in the world.
The University was founded in 1832, and developed in Durham and Newcastle until 1963, when the independent University of Newcastle upon Tyne came into being. The University is collegiate and is located in the city of Durham The College of St Hild and St Bede, Durham's largest college, offers one of the most picturesque and beautiful settings Set within 16 acres of beautiful grounds that lead to the edge of the River Wear, the College also enjoys views across the historic city to the spectacular, world-famous cathedral.
