Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

I haven’t got a TEFL qualification, but I’m really keen to try this - shall I apply anyway?

We can employ people without formal TEFL qualifications in these STS centres: Brighton, Bournemouth, Cork, Dublin, Eastbourne, Edinburgh, Hastings, IOW, Jersey, Oxford, Torquay.

However, due to British Council accreditation criteria we can’t employ anyone without a recognised TEFL qualification in these LSC centres unless they have QTS: Cambridge, Colchester, Central London, Chelmsford, Edinburgh, London Harrow, Portsmouth, Southampton, Walsall.

I don’t have accommodation in any of the centres. Shall I apply anyway?

We have very few residential places available and these are all at LSC centres, so a formal TEFL qualification is required for them. The residential posts are very demanding as they involve evening activities in addition to the normal duties.

I’m not available at the beginning of July. Should I still apply?

In most centres the busiest period is the second week in July; your chances of being employed will be reduced significantly if you are not available then.

I’m a working school teacher looking for extra work in the summer. Should I apply?

We are very happy to employ qualified teachers, but the problem is that they are not usually available at the beginning of July, which is when we need people to start.

When will I hear if my application has been received or has been successful?

Due to the very large volume we receive, we cannot acknowledge receipt of individual applications. We will contact people we would like to employ as soon as we have confirmation of student numbers so that we can make a definite job offer.

When are interviews held?

Most interviews will be held over the telephone, and are usually in May and June.

How long do contracts last?

It depends on the centre, as they are all open for different lengths of time, which is dictated by their availability and popularity. The average is four/five weeks, but we usually offer three weeks in our initial appointment letters because at the time of recruiting teachers student numbers and dates are still not confirmed. Contracts can then be extended week by week for those teachers who are keen to work longer (subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of more work).
